Our services

At Marigold Therapy, we offer a range of trauma informed and neuro-affirming services, therapies and groups to ensure each session is tailored to best support clients in reaching their respective goals.

Services Offered

Occupational Therapy

In occupational therapy, we refer to ‘occupations’ as the activities clients find meaningful and want to do as well as everyday tasks that are involved in taking care of oneself and others.

As occupational therapists, we work with our clients to identify the skills and strengths they have, whilst empowering them to develop and build on these skills to minimise the challenges that they face in their day to day lives.

At Marigold Therapy, our practice is trauma-informed and neuro-affirming. We are holisic in our assessment and intervention. With your permission we enjoy working with all the important people in your life. This includes not only your family, friends and/or support persons but collaborating with your other service providers in a multidisciplinary team as well.

Ayres Sensory Integration Assessment and Therapy

Sensory perception includes awareness and interpretation of sensation. Basic sensory perception involves the ability to discriminate one aspect of sensory stimuli from others, for example smooth or bumpy tactile sensation, music versus conversation auditory sensation, vanilla versus vinegar olfactory sensation, etc.

Sensory perception becomes enhanced and expanded as cognitive, language, and social-emotional elements combine with sensory experiences (e.g. knowing what is happening and having feelings about an experience triggered by sensations such as the smell of a holiday dinner or sights and sounds associated with a specific time of year. Most learning occurs through “multi” sensory integration, or “multimodal integration” which involves information from different sensory modalities, being processed and integrated by the nervous systems to maximise meaning. Sensory perception links emotional connections and memory – perceptions are heightened with strong emotions. Sensory perception is the basic of praxis – perception is used to inform actions and update neuronal action plans and to create sensory motor memories.

Sensory perception is a critical foundation for learning and skill acquisition. Inefficient or poor sensory perception can lead to many difficulties in daily life and interfere with all aspects of participation and occupation.

We provide assessment and intervention for the following senses:

  • Tactile perception – the ability of the brain to perceive the information that comes in from the skin (touch, temperature, etc).

  • Proprioception – amount of force you use and changing amount of force.

  • Praxis - is the cognitive-perceptual ability used to formulate ideas about what can be done to plan actions and to executive those actions. Further, how sensation drives how we know what to do with our bodies; which is based on past experiences of sensory information in the body. Praxis is highly linked to tactile and proprioception.  Praxis is highly significant for novel and complex actions and learning something new. Problems in praxis can lead to frustration and social alienation. Children with poor praxis may withdraw or resist participation and be seen as demonstrating behavioural issues.

  • Ocular, Postural and Bilateral Integration - involve motor functions that are highly dependent on vestibular and proprioceptive sensory functions. Ocular, postural and bilateral integration are used continually in daily skills.

  • Auditory localisation – the ability to identify the location or origin of sound.

  • Visual perception – the brain’s ability to interpret information that comes through the eyes.

  • Vestibular – the vestibular system is located in the ear. Receptors tell us where or what movement is occurring. Vestibular driven milestones include, head control, rolling, sitting, crawling, standing and walking.

  • Sensory reactivity - Response or reaction to sensory experiences. Help us know what needs our attention and actions and what can stay in the background. Serves as a survival mechanism to ensure we react when in danger. Allows us to “screen out” information that is not relevant at the moment (e.g. background noise, faint odours, passing visual stimuli, changes in light or temperature). There is a typical range for ignoring vs reacting, although some or general more or less reactive to certain sensory experiences. Reactivity to sensory experiences is affected by and also affects state of arousal (e.g. alert versus lethargic). When reactivity is extremely over or under reactive, then it is considered a problem. The term “sensory reactivity” is part of the DSM 5 diagnostic criteria for Autism.

Trauma Informed Practices

Tannille utilises a range of practices and underpinning theories to support people who have experienced trauma. Trauma is the result of horrific experiences a person has faced. Often these experiences have not been voiced, heard or listened to which creates poor self-esteem, difficulty with knowing a person’s identity and so many other challenges. Tannille understands that trauma is a mountain, there is no way to remove the mountain, however we can learn to work around it, rather than continually falling into it, harming ourselves further. Tannille does not believe people need to be “fixed” rather people need support to build compassionate for themselves, understand how trauma impacts them, create a positive experience of self, build advocacy skills and create connection to yourself, people around you and the local community.

Working with shame is a big part of this journey. Tannille’s practices start with supporting you to understand how the effects of abuse and violence have impacted on you, this does not include digging up all of the experiences you have had and retraumatising you. Tannille works in a gentle but supported way of holding space to ensure re-traumatisation does not occur. Further to this Tannille understands that trauma is held in the body (Bessel van der Kolk, the Body Keeps the Score) and consequently talk therapies alone will not support you to move around and in front of your trauma. Tannille completed the Trauma Research Foundation’s Certificate Program in Traumatic Stress Studies in 2024. Tannille also utilised sensory system and somatic practices (body work).

Tannille has regular supervision and mentoring from an incredible social worker who has worked with women and children who have or are experiencing domestic or family violence for 20 years. This support enables Tannille to support people who have or currently are experiencing trauma, domestic violence and or family violence.

The following video briefly explains coercive control and red flags people may or may not recognise as violence and abuse. Please be aware the following video may be triggering for some (click HERE to watch).

Tannille is passionate about supporting professionals through vicarious trauma, for more information on vicarious please follow the link to see a range of resources created by Vikki Reynolds - Resisting Burnout | Vikki Reynolds PhD RCC.

Neuro-Affirming Peer Groups

In our Neuro-Affirming Peer groups we support people to identify strengths and challenges. The benefit of a group is we can learn from others experiences and support each other in solidarity. The group is peer lead with the therapist working to support group members to be active participants in a group setting. Each week we focus on different goals and skills as deemed important by the group participants.

The group has a focus on learning about neuro-diverse brains and learning strategies to work with our brains rather than against them.

To learn more or get involved, please email us at admin@marigoldtherapy.com.au
